STATE TO STATE COMPARISONS

Although mass incarceration is a country wide problem, it is clear their are differences between state laws and policies. Here we explore the disparities between states and how mass incarceration effects parts of the U.S. differently.

In addition to the resources here, The Sentencing Project, an organization that works for a fair and effective U.S. criminal justice system by promoting reform, has also compiled state based data in the form of an interactive map.

Imprisonment rate

This data shows the number of people incarcerated in state prisons per 100,000 residents in each state.

It is clear from this data that Louisiana and Oklahoma have the greatest imprison rates while Massachusetts and Maine have the lowest

Black/White Disparity

This data shows the racial disparity in incarceration rates between black and white U.S. residents in each state.

​

Felony Disenfranchisement rate

 

This data shows the number of people barred from voting due to a felony conviction per 100,000 residents in each state.
